AHS Calendar Update

There is some confusion regarding the recent district communication about a change to the first day of school. The Calendar Q & A document (pdf) gives a bit more detail:

Why did the first day of school change?

The first day of school is earlier in both the 2014 - 2015 and the 2015 - 2016 school year calendars because of the reinstatement of an instructional day that had been a furlough day for the past four years as part of a budget reduction solution. The revised calendars were approved by the LPS Board of Education on June 26, 2 014.

The calendar change comes after the close of the 2013 - 2014 school year because it was part of the negotiated agreement reached between the school district and the Littleton Education Association. The agreement was ratified by the teachers the last w eek of June. Thanks to the support and advocacy efforts of parents and community members, the Colorado Legislature passed the Student Success Act this spring, which restores about $2.5 million of previously cut funds to LPS, which makes the restoration of an instructional day possible. (Each instructional day costs LPS about $500,000.) However, the bill was not signed until late May, which affected the timing of negotiations and calendar decisions.

Due to the short notice and in an effort to best accommod ate families and school communities, schools have the flexibility to decide how to use the first day of school, which is now Friday, August 15, 2014. For example, h igh school schedules for August 15 will continue to consist of Freshman Orientation, and cl asses will begin Monday, August 18. Elementary schools will have a half - day on August 15, and full days will begin August 18. Some schools are incorporating back - to - school events into the first day of school, as well. Individual schools will be communica ting with families about activities for Friday, August 15.

Adding back a day of instruction ultimately serves our students, and that is always the goal of Littleton Public Schools.

So, for AHS, the bottom line is basically no change in our plans for August. Friday, August 15th will still be Link Crew Orientation for Incoming Freshmen, and Monday, August 18th will still be the first day of classes for all students. If you have students in LPS elementary or middle schools, their schedule may be different than originally planned, so please check with those schools.
