 Today we brainstormed for our independent study.  The first slide captures the 3 prompts we brainstormed in response to and the second slide captures the criteria for your topic.  Here is my example of how these might turn into topics for you.

 Today we talked about supporting persuasion.  If you were gone, open up these slides, copying just the first slide into the next blank right page in your ISN; ignore the second.  Then, apply your understanding to your blog post for today, using 1 or more of those forms of persuasion, support each of the reasons for your argument (i.e. your "because" statements in your topic sentence) and highlight those pieces of supporting evidence in yellow.

 Today we started our final project by working on the written component.  If you were absent, create a Google doc, which you share with me, and, in that docuement, craft a literary analysis paragraph in which you answer our guiding question: what separates the civilized from the savage?  Be sure to begin with a topic sentence that states your position, includes text title and author, and provides reasoning for that position; transition between ideas; provide 3 quotes to support your argument; lead into and out of each quote; provide a concluding sentence that recaptures the ideas in your topic sentence; proofread your work.

HW:  rd ch 6 for THURSDAY focusing on motifs.  Try to identify as many as you can in ch 6.  In addition to simply identifying them, use them to explore bigger ideas in the text.  Why does Remarque use these motifs?  What is he trying to show?  Capture your thinking in 7 thoughtful annotations.

 Today we did a peer editing exercise with your literary paragraphs.  If you were gone, look over these slides, applying your understand to the writing assignment we've been working on this week.  Use the handouts uploaded all week long to guide you.  When you finish, share your paragraph with me on Google docs. If you're struggling with this, let me know on Monday and we'll work on it together.

 Today we discussed the beginning of ch 7 using these exercises.  If you were gone, please follow the directions on these slides, completing them in your ISN.

HW:  finish ch 7.  As you read, focus on Paul's feelings as he returns home for the first time.  For each place that he visists--commander's office, garden, his house &, more specifically, his room--capture, in1 thoughtful annotation, how Paul reacts and what's interesting/ surprising to you about that reaction.

Tuesday, November 6

 Today we completed these exercises in response to ch 7's conclusion.  Complete this in your ISN if you were gone.

HW:  ch 8 & beginning of ch 9-page break on pg. 201 for tomorrow.  As you read, consider how Remarque characterizes Paul & how Remarque characteizes the Russian soldiers.  Rows 1-3: focus on Paul; rows 4-6:  focus on the Russain soliders, capturing your thinking in 5 thoughtful annotations.

Wednesday, November 7

 Today we did an exercise comparing Paul's perspective that of the Russian soldiers.  We'll be adding to this discussion tomorrow, so you don't need to make this up if you were gone.

HW:  finish ch 9.  Continue to consider the different perspectives we get in this section of the text.  How is the Frenchmen Paul meets in the mudhole characterized?  How are their perspectives similar?  Different?  Capture your thinking in 5 thoughtful annotations.

 Today we did a poetry explication exercise & dicussion.  You do not need to make this up if you were gone.

HW:  finish AQ.  If you were in class today, complete the word encounters exercise as you read, recording at least 15 thoughtful observations in your chart.  If you were absent, annotate on the Paul we see at the end of the book.  Consider this in relation to the Paul we met in chapter 1 & diagrammed.  Who is he now?  What does he believe in?  Value?  What did he leave behind?  etc.  Capture your thinking in 5 thoughtful annotations.

Tuesday, November 13  To wrap up our thinking about AQonWF, we finished our big diagrams of Paul, then completed this reflection.  Complete this in your notebooks if you were absent today.

Today we began talking about & working on our final project for All Quiet.  Click here to see that handout if you were gone, and complete the first step on the handout (where it says "this is due at the end of the first work day").

 Today we had our first work day for our PSA.  If you are working alone, complete the first step on the handout I gave you yesterday and also begin working on your script.  If working with others, check in with your group members.

 Today we had another work day for our PSA.  If you are working alone, complete your script and also begin working on your PSA; even if you can't begin the media component, begin researching, gathering statistics, etc.  If working with others, check in with your group members.

 Today we practiced our presentations in preparation for their beginning tomorrow.  If you were absent today, you/ your group will present on Friday.  Be sure you are prepared.

HW:  prepare for tomorrow's presentation.  Your project should be exported as a WMV and drop boxed or on a flashdrive.  You should also have a Works Cited either printed or in your project.
