Math Department

There are currently sixteen teachers in the math department.  Each teacher participates in one PLC, either Algebra I, Geometry, or Algebra II.  Each PLC is in the process of developing three common assessments per semester and are beginning to analyze the data from those common assessments.  Teachers will then use these results to implement best teaching practices and our pyramid of interventions.

Algebra I PLC

Essential Learning(s)

Students will be able to evaluate expressions including positive and negative real numbers, exponents, and like terms with or without the use of a calculator.

Students should correctly incorporate mathematical terminology.

Goals for the year

Give three common assessments.

Incorporate more vocabulary into the classroom.

Share and implement best practices so students will achieve success in evaluating algebraic concepts.

Common Assessment(s)

Students were given a pre-test at the beginning of the semester to determine correct placement and to identify skills that need to be addressed.

Geometry PLC

Essential Learning(s)

To make the Algebra/Geometry connection by assessing geometric concepts through coordinate geometry.

Goal for the year

Students use a variety of techniques to demonstrate understanding of the Algebra and Geometry curriculum in order to successfully progress into Algebra II.

Successes

The students have made more connections between Algebra and Geometry.

We have been successful in creating and assessing our Essential Learnings

Algebra II PLC

Essential Learning(s)

Students will be able to identify characteristics of equations within families of functions in order to manipulate, apply, and graph equations.

State Standard 2:

Students use algebraic methods to explore, model, and describe patterns and
functions involving numbers, shapes, data, and graphs in problem-solving situations
and communicate the reasoning used in solving these problems
Benchmark #2 Grade 9-12
represent functional relationships using written
explanations, tables, equations, and graphs, and describing
the connections among these representations

Goals for the semester

Our goals for the semester include developing three common assessments that will help us in determining if our students have achieved, understand, and can apply the essential learning. Our goals also include building the students confidence and foundation of Algebra skills so that they can be successful in the next level of math, either Probability and Statistics or Trigonometry and Pre-Calculus.

Successes

This is the second year that Arapahoe has had an Algebra II PLC team. This PLC gave the first common assessment during the first six week grading period, extracted the data, and began to analyze the data. From our first try at administering the common assessment, we have developed a set of criteria that we feel will be more effective when assessing the students again this semester.

Common Assessment(s)

The PLC has already given two common assessments and will be giving one more in the upcoming weeks.
