College Planning Timeline & Checklist

Freshmen

Sophomores

  • Register for the PLAN in the Guidance Office during the fall
  • Register for the PSAT in the Guidance Office during the fall if you are in accelerated classes and would like to take it as a practice test
  • Review test preparation materials for the PSAT  
  • Review and update your four year plan
  • Attend post graduate center information session in the spring of your 10th grade year
  • Meet with your counselor to select courses for Junior year
  • Explore careers and other post secondary options
  • Attend a college fair

Juniors

  • All Juniors sign up for the PSAT in the fall
  • Review test preparation materials for the PSAT
  • Attend college fairs and information sessions
  • Visit the post graduate center and make sure you are signed up for Naviance
  • Research colleges using Naviance or another college search tool such as College In Colorado
  • Visit colleges you are interested in attending
  • Prepare for the ACT test taken in the spring
  • Decide if you want to take the SAT or SAT Subject tests and register for the tests in the spring
  • Review graduation requirements with your counselor and select courses for Senior year
  • Review the Warrior Guide to College
  • Review college applications and admissions requirements
  • If recommendations are required, think about who to ask
  • Begin college essays
  • Check deadlines for Military Academies, ROTC and summer programs
  • File for NCAA eligibility if you are planning to participate in athletics at Division I and/or Division II schools.  Request a transcript to be sent to NCAA at the end of the junior year

Seniors

  • Review graduation requirements and class selection with your counselor
  • Sign up for and take SAT and ACT as needed
  • Complete your college folder in the Guidance office
  • Visit the post graduate center and your counselor for help with college applications and to sign up for college visits
  • Log on to Naviance to complete your biography for letters of recommendation, request transcripts, and complete college essays and applications
  • Visit campuses, college representatives, and attend college fairs
  • College applications can be processed beginning in October (allow 2 weeks processing time)
  • Pay attention to deadlines
  • Conduct scholarship searches
  • Apply for financial aid (January 1)
