 Art Department Minimize

The Art Department has really been using our PLC time to delve into each of our beginning level courses, including Drawing I and Design I.  These classes are the foundation for all other art class that the students may take and we really felt that it was important to re-work and coordinate both of these classes and really dive into what they needed to learn in order to move on to other courses.

Over the past year and a half, we have developed new essential learnings (things that we feel students have to know in order to be successful in our classes as well as others that they may decide to take in the future) for Design I and Drawing I.

Essential Learning(s)

DESIGN I:

  • Students will have a basic understanding of COMPOSITION and will be able to create pieces of artwork that are put together in a visually pleasing way, by including each of the following elements: Focal Point; Movement/Flow; Repetition; Asymmetrical Balance; Symmetrical Balance; Shape; Size; Overlap.
  • Students will understand and be able to apply the basic ideas of COLOR THEORY.  This includes: Primary; Secondary; and Tertiary/Intermediate; Tints; Shades; and Monochromatic, Analogous, Complementary, Triadic, Warm, and Cool Color Schemes.
  • Students will recognize and be able to apply each of the ELEMENTS OF DESIGN: Line, Shape, Value, Color, and Texture/Pattern.

DRAWING I:

  • Each student will have a basic understanding of OBSERVATIONAL DRAWING (Drawing subjects as you see them in front of you) and will apply what they have learned using a variety of different subject matter.
  • Students will have a working knowledge and understanding of how to use a variety of drawing materials to create TONALITY/SHADING (value) on each of the basic shapes (a cone, cylinder, cube, and a sphere) using a light source.  Students will be taking a 2-Dimensional Shape and turning it into a 3-Dimensional Shape.
  • The students will have a working knowledge of PERSPECTIVE, and be able to apply basic rules to all shapes/objects, using either 1-point or 2-point perspective.
  • Each student will be able to effectively draw a box in 3 situations (in both 1-point perspective and 2-point perspective): a box showing the top; a box showing the bottom; a box showing neither the top nor the bottom, but might show one side.

Goals for the year:  This school year, our goal has been to create a good common assessment for both Design I and Drawing I.  In Design I, we are focusing our common assessment around color theory (wanting our students to know and understand the color wheel and how color can work with Design.)  For Drawing I, our common assessment is geared around One and Two Point Perspective.

Successes:  We have successfully created new essential learnings for each of our basic classes and discussions have really been focused around what students really need to know and understand in each of those classes in order to be successful as they enter upper level courses.  We have also had several conversations around Composition and how it can be utilized to enhance ALL of the courses that we teach in the art department.  PLC's have allowed us to refocus what we teach and make our classes more student centered.

Common Assessment(s) -- In Design I, we have created a formative common assessment geared towards Color Theory.  Right now, we have a pre-assessment to gauge where are students are going into our Color Theory unit.  After looking at the data, our PLC would like to create a summative assessment that uses the full color wheel (SEE EXAMPLES OF NOTES).
